Anti-War Teacher Loses Tax Case

States, Indochina on Dependents List

A professor of religion, who claimed 53 dependents on his withholding form, was convicted of violating U.S. tax laws.

Ellis H. Rece, Jr. associate professor at Paine College, claimed the 50 states of the United States and the countries of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam on his withholding form.

Mr. Rece testified that he wrote three letters to the IRS giving his reasons for claiming 53 dependents as religious conviction, dictates of conscience, and opposition to the Vietnam war.

He was convicted in U.S. District Court for supplying false information to his employer — the college. The offense is a misdemeanor, and Mr. Rece will be sentenced later.
