A few notes from around the web:

• First, a letter in Salon today from “CarolynC” that caught my eye:

  Chris Hedges (War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning) said on “Democracy Now” several months ago, that he intended to stop paying income taxes if the U.S. invades Iran. Now this is, to me, how a patriot acts.

  There are only a few people with this kind of courage, and of course, we all have perfectly good reasons not to join the tax resisters: we have parents, kids, dogs, cats, etc. We’re too young or we’re too old, too rich, too poor. We do important work that might be interrupted. But ultimately, we need to face the fact that if we continue to pay our taxes, we are enabling the U.S. war machine. Pure and simple. What we do about that is between each of us and our own conscience.

• The National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee is having their next national meeting in Newton, Kansas in November.
• The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle profiles the 25-year-old Genesee Co-Op Federal Credit Union, which “has not lost sight of its founders’ values.”

  For instance, the Co-Op still offers “military tax resistance” accounts — no-interest savings accounts used by depositors to avoid generating taxable income that would support the military.

A new issue of NWTRCC’s newsletter is out. It includes a run-down of the latest news on the war tax resistance front, a report from the 25^th anniversary gathering, and an article by Don Kaufman that focuses on the history of war tax resistance among American Mennonites.
