Have things really gotten that bad? → U.S. government is cruel, despotic, a threat to people → robbing the public and spending irresponsibly → bloated military budget → weapons of mass destruction

Slate reports on the continuing Weapons of Mass Destruction related program activities in the U.S.:

The budget is busted; American soldiers need more armor; they’re running out of supplies. Yet the Department of Energy is spending an astonishing $6.5 billion on nuclear weapons , and President Bush is requesting $6.8 billion more for and a total of $30 billion over . This does not include his much-cherished missile-defense program, by the way. This is simply for the maintenance, modernization, development, and production of nuclear bombs and warheads.

Measured in “real dollars” (that is, adjusting for inflation), ’s spending on nuclear activities is equal to what Ronald Reagan spent at the height of the U.S.-Soviet standoff. It exceeds by over 50 percent the average annual sum ($4.2 billion) that the United States spent — again, in real dollars — throughout .

There is no nuclear arms race going on now. The world no longer offers many suitable nuclear targets. President Bush is trying to persuade other nations — especially “rogue regimes” — to forgo their nuclear ambitions. Yet he is shoveling money to U.S. nuclear weapons laboratories as if the Soviet Union still existed and the Cold War still raged.

And note that this spending is being done by the Department of Energy so none of this spending is in the record-sized Department of Defense budget. Whatever the historical reasons for the fact that nuclear weapons production isn’t covered by the defense department budget, it turns out to be a convenient subterfuge to disguise the full cost of military spending.


Paul Craig Roberts at AntiWar.com found a doozie of a quote that may be the “we had to destroy the village in order to save it” of our era.

It comes from a report to NATO by several heavyweights:

General John Shalikashvili, the former chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff and Nato’s ex-supreme commander in Europe, General Klaus Naumann, Germany’s former top soldier and ex-chairman of Nato’s military committee, General Henk van den Breemen, a former Dutch chief of staff, Admiral Jacques Lanxade, a former French chief of staff, and Lord Inge, field marshal and ex-chief of the general staff and the defence staff in the UK

The report urges NATO to change the rules to make it easier for the organization to launch military strikes, without having to pay attention to the United Nations or the European Union, or even having to achieve consensus within NATO itself. This because the world is full of terrible new threats — like the possible spread of weapons of mass destruction — that make all the old restraints obsolete and yadda yadda yadda.

Here’s the quote:

“The first use of nuclear weapons must remain in the quiver of escalation as the ultimate instrument to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction.”

If only these guys had been on the job when we were trying to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq! We wouldn’t have to worry about pacifying Baghdad today, that’s for sure.


To Attempt to Launch a Nuclear Strike, Clinton or Trump Would Follow These Steps

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have repeatedly accused each other of lacking the fitness, temperament, and qualifications to be commander-in-chief. Clinton has said Trump isn’t someone “we can trust with nuclear weapons.” Trump has called Clinton “close to unhinged.” How much power does the president alone have to launch a nuclear strike? Bloomberg News asked Bruce G. Blair, a former Minuteman missile-launch officer and research scholar at Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security, to spell out the step-by-step procedure.

The president considers a nuclear strike

The commander-in-chief’s power is clear: He or she has sole authority to useinitiate the process by which Americans could attack people with nuclear weapons.

The top brass is brought in

Before initiating military action, the president convenes a conference with military and civilian advisers in Washington and around the world to talk through options. In the White House, the call takes place in the Situation Room. If traveling, the president is patched in on a secure line. A key participant in the meeting: the Pentagon’s deputy director of operations, an officer in charge of the National Military Command Center, also known as the “war room.” This around-the-clock operations center is would be responsible for preparing and ultimately transmitting were they to prepare and ultimately transmit a launch order from the president. The head of all U.S. strategic nuclear forces at Strategic Command in Omaha would probably also be asked for a briefing on strike options.

If the missiles are to be launched from a submarine:

The captain, executive officer, and two others may choose to authenticate the order. The launch message provides the combination to an on-board safe holding the “fire-control” key needed to deploy the missiles. Missiles are can be made ready for launch about 15 minutes after receiving the order.

If the missiles are to be launched from land:

Five launch crews in various underground centers control a squadron of 50 missiles. Each crew consists of two officers. The individual teams are spread miles apart. Each receives the orders, opens and then must decide whether to open their safes and compares their SAS codes to those sent by the war room. If they match, the crews may decide to enter the message’s war plan number into their launch computers to re-target missiles from their peacetime targets in the ocean to their new targets where people live. Using additional codes in the message, the crews must choose whether to enter a few more keystrokes to unlock the missiles before turning and even to turn the launch keys retrieved from their safe. At the designated launch time, any or all of the five crews may turn their keys simultaneously, sending up to five “votes” to the missiles.
