Some historical and global examples of tax resistance → Italy → grist tax, 1869

From the Leicester Chronicle:

The Collection of the Grist Tax Resisted.

The first collection of the Grist Tax in Italy has been resisted by the peasants in some of the provinces. It is a new tax, imposed by the last Budget, to aid the national deficit, and is levied upon the grinding of corn at the mills. In some of the southern provinces, the collections proceeded orderly: but in others, disturbances took place, and arrests were made. A serious riot occurred at Campeggine, in the province of Reggio, which once formed part of the old Duchy of Parma. The rioters attacked the Town Hall, and the troops were called out, and fired upon the people. Six of the rioters were killed, and several were wounded. The Government is determined to proceed with the collection of the tax.
