glared upon me… — probably a reference to the poem The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which was first published in 1855.

 Hiawatha! Hiawatha!”
Ludlow would later come to have a racist hatred of Native Americans, “the copper-faced devils, whom Longfellow meanders about in Hiawatha poetry.”
